For this poet, the season was literal as well as metaphorical, and it can be so for the reader, as well.

This assertion rests on David Tracy's notion of a "classic text," one that has achieved a degree of "public-ness" through long usage and widespread familiarity.
A British reviewer once wrote of Brittain: "Some day Miss Brittain may write a good book". Clearly this isn't it. Vain, pretentious, a failed poet, a failed novelist (her own husband calling her work libelous), and desperate for public acclaim as a moral crusader, it's difficult to accept that the author was the same as that of Testament of Youth.
